Canadian Oil Sands Impact

Canadian oil sands can provide Ohio's industries with a steady, reliable supply of oil.  This will help to stabilize input costs, fuel growth, and foster economic and energy security.

Many Ohio industries, which employ thousands of Buckeyes, depend on oil to fuel their operations. The  following are examples of  top industries and the number of people t each employs:

  • Ohio is the top automotive supplier in the United States, and second in the nation for motor vehicle production, employing more than 120,000 people in the state.
  • Ohio is home to more than  21,000 manufacturing companies.  Cincinnati, alone, ranks sixth in the nation for manufacturing jobs.
  • Ohio’s Polymer and Advanced Materials industry is one of the state’s most expansive industries, generating $49 billion in annual sales revenue and employing more than 140,000 Buckeyes/Ohioans.
  • Ohio has 76,500 farms covering  more than 14 million acres - nearly 55 percent of the total land area.
  • Ohio's food processing industry is one of the top five in the nation, employing more than 60,000 people.

These industries rely on oil to power equipment, deliver supplies and transport finished products to market.  Additionally, industries, such as Polymer and Advanced Materials, also rely on oil as a primary feedstock for the goods they manufacture -  including plastic, rubber, sealant and adhesives.

Canadian oil sands can meet Ohio's oil demands with greater reliability and with less risk of disruption.  With this steady, abundant source of energy from a friendly source, Buckeyes can achieve the benefits of energy security with less volatility in energy costs.   The end result is smooth operations that can grow and continue to provide jobs to Ohio citizens.

Canadian Trade Grows Jobs
Many of the jobs in Ohio's industries also depend on the significant trade relationship between Ohio and Canada.  This relationship results in the export of more than $13 billion in goods to Canada annually, and the employment of more than 300,000 Buckeye jobs as depicted in the graphic below:

Supplying the industries that export goods to Canada with a steady supply of Canadian oil is not only beneficial for U.S.-Canada trade relations, but also benefits the companies that are producing the products Canada purchases.  Any strategy that helps companies become more cost-effective in the production of their goods grows jobs and the economy.
